5 Tips for Explaining Low LSAT Scores or Grades in Your Application

Most law schools provide optional space to explain your LSAT score and grades. While it can be tempting to explain away poor performance, consider these 5 things. 1. The facts speak for themselves. As they say in law school, bad facts make bad law. If your LSAT score is low, the best way to show that you can do better is to retake it and score higher. I rarely encourage applicants to address the LSAT in the personal statement. 2. Don’t say it. Do it. Law schools use grades and LSAT scores as proxies for an applicant’s ability to pass the bar exam – which in most states is a 2-to-3 day standardized test. You can’t explain why you didn’t pass the bar – you either do or don’t. Same with grades and LSAT. If you can do better, do it. You can also emphasize other academic achievements in you application to show your ability to tackle difficult work. As a side note: If you have a documented disability and are entitled to extra time or other accommodations on the LSAT, take it. Under new rules, this information is not reported to schools, so all the admissions committees will see is your (higher) score. 3. Be concise. Law schools differ on how they will consider multiple LSAT scores. Some look to the highest score; others will unofficially average your scores. If you bombed your first LSAT (and hopefully it only happened once), you should explain why if there was a concrete reason, e.g. you were ill, you filled out the answer sheet incorrectly, or you had a personal tragedy. Explain the situation in the most concrete way possible, and be brief. Whatever you do, don’t make excuses or try to justify your performance in a lengthy diatribe. 4. Be accurate. If you were on academic probation, you should say so and provide context. Don’t try to conceal problems. Law schools value honesty and integrity above all qualities. Also, needless to say, any addendum should be grammatically correct and clear. 5. Upward and onward. You should emphasize upward trends. For the LSAT, the scores speak for themselves (see #1). For your grades, if your grades improved over time, you should point that out to the admissions committee as it may not be that obvious. It’s tempting to use the addendum space to justify your scores or performance. But, admissions committees really read these sections just to get a grip on the facts. If you have extenuating circumstances, say so, but don’t belabor the point. School systems in the United states have been implementing sexual education into classrooms. Arguments are abundant when dealing with such fragile situations and there are many advantages and disadvantages of sexual education being taught in the public schools. It seems that most parents are either strongly for or against sex education classes, but there are a few parents that are on both sides. In fact, there are more parents that support sex education classes. However, there are pros and cons that must be considered by parents when dealing with sex education classes that one would not have to consider with a less controversial topic such as math or reading. In general, parents need to be aware of his or her own family or religious beliefs and values and know their child’s intellect and maturity levels. Analysis Of The Book Redeployment By Phil Klay Essay

In the United States, thousands of men and woman join the army every year. Post-war trauma effects can influence the emotional and psychological state of the soldier when coming back from combat or reentering civilian life, however, people are not fully aware of such problem. Winner of the 2014 National Book Award for fiction, Phil Klay in his first book Redeployment, delivers readers a unique experience to the front lines of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq through the narratives of different characters and their experiences. The first chapter Redeployment exposes the life of a soldier reentering civilian life, who takes action for the life of his suffering dog Vicar after killing hundreds of dogs during the war while having to address his post-war emotional and psychological state. Art and Knowledge Essay An area of knowledge that is usually regarded as less certain than mathematics or the sciences is the arts. When one watches an episode of American Idol (a singing competition), one may wonder if claims related to a contestants singing can be criticized with appropriate grounds. Given the condition that participants on the show are required to create personal renditions of various songs; logically speaking then, the judges shouldnt be able to justify their criticism as they themselves may not entirely understand the singers interpretation. From my experience in the arts, particularly in music, I have received numerous feedbacks about my piano performances from various adjudicators. From reading these comments, I found out that the main focus of their criticisms was based on my technical mastery, not improvisation. This suggests that before personal interpretation, one must consider the mechanics of art; in my case, the judges made knowledge claims about the fluency of my playing and the appropriateness of the tempo which are essential components to the practice of piano. These fundamental rules exist to provide artists with a foundation that allows them to develop original ideas. Therefore, knowledge claims in the arts arguably, can be rationally criticized on the basis of technicality. Although these fundamentals are not required to produce art, one can still be judged as though one possessed them. Going back to the American Idol example, knowledge claims that concern a contestants singing, regardless of whether he had any training, can be justified through reasoning based on technical abilities such as the execution of various pitches. The issue of subjectivity in the arts, however, becomes very problematic when we stray away from technical components and move towards personal interpretation. This is because grounds used as the basis of rational criticism may differ from person to person. Similar to mathematics, the other ways of knowing: perception, language, and emotion play a major role in the reasoning process. James O. Young, author of Art and Knowledge, claims that: Frequently, audiences do not need to acquire new experience before they can recognise that the perspective presented by an artwork is right. A good work of art can be convincing just because it enables audiences to reinterpret their past experience. (111) When we deduce that a piece of artwork has met the necessary requirements, we can determine using perception and our past experiences, as Young suggests, the features that are most appealing to us. The judges of American Idol use a similar process: when a number of contestants possess similar abilities, they employ emotions such as amazement or curiosity, to decide which singer has the personality of a superstar. One interesting point about art is that it can describe the world in a plethora of ways, from experiences in the physical world to the supernatural. Due to this abstract nature, many people have claimed that art can provide important insight into the way we understand the world through interpretation. This indicates that knowledge gained through subjectivity is not always unreliable, and perhaps there is an element of certainty gained instead. Although we can evaluate knowledge claims in the arts, other ways of knowing should be considered during processes of reasoning. Pythagoreans thought that only rational numbers existed in mathematics. After taking the square root of two, they realized that there were also irrational numbers and as a result, one of their fundamental truths was broken. As can be seen, when emotion, language, and perception are combined with the reasoning process, we can acquire truths through not only objectivity but also subjectivity. Knowledge claims in mathematics and the arts can be open to rational criticism, but reason alone may actually prevent the progress of both areas. By referring to this information, it is likely that these trends will occur in the other areas of knowledge.

Aims, scope, motivation We respond to a lament by Cornelissen (2005, p. 751) that â€Å"works on metaphor . . . are still falling short in offering an informed and grounded account of metaphor’s workings† [italics applied]. As with McGoun et al. (2007a), our objective is to improve understanding of the way metaphors are implicated in accounting. However, we differ from McGoun et al. (2007a) in two important ways. First, we focus on the workings of metaphor in accounting, as revealed by empirical evidence. Second, we conceive the ACCOUNTING IS A LENS metaphor as an element of a broader, more encompassing conceptual metaphor: ACCOUNTING IS AN INSTRUMENT. We adopt the view that accounting is a language-like discipline involving ï ¬ gurative expressions and other elusive and perplexing modes of communication. As such, it is ideological, and an important means of persuasion- it is a form of â€Å"writing† which yields â€Å"no access to reality other than through structures of representation† (Robson, 1992, p. 690). As a result of this, she refuses to talk to anybody except her brother, Bailey, and retreats into a cocoon of silence. She is listless and admits that â€Å"For nearly a year, I sopped around the house, the Store, the school, and the church, like an old biscuit, dirty and inedible† (Angelou, ).
